Hello, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read my first web design related blog post.
I am a reddit addict in some ways, I don’t browse a huge variety anymore but I spend a good amount of time on it daily.
One of the subreddits I moderate is r/Championship and I’ve done so for about a year since Newcastle United got relegated from the Premier League. In this post I’m going to go through some changes I’ve made to the design over the past year.
Initial design: This is the design that the subreddit had when I became mod.
Here the subreddit has a very clean look, the sidebar looks nice but the banner I felt needed improving. The actual EFL Championship logo had changed since then too so it made sense to replace it.
New header design: This is the first design I contributed to.
As you can see, I updated the brand to the new EFL Championship logo and included some of the leagues players in the header. I used the theme r/Naut as a starting point to give the theme a fresher look.
Updated sidebar/post flair: I added a lot more to the sidebar taking inspiration from other subreddits such as r/NFL and r/NHL, I also took inspiration from r/LiverpoolFC and r/NUFC for the post flair.
Sidebar: League Table
Sidebar: Live on TV
Updated header: I changed the header image again ready for the 2017/18 season. I took inspiration from r/detroitlions for this one where the players are black and white by default and change to colour when you hover over them. The header is a lot bigger than previously and it’s something I’m not a big fan of but was needed for the new design. It’s probably something I will change in the next version.
That’s all for this post, thank you all for reading, and if you have any suggestions for the subreddit, please let me know!
